I Like You – God Loves You!

Have you ever heard the phrase by beloved children’s television host, Mr. Fred Rogers, where he shares, “I like you just the way you are.”? It’s been a popular statement for many decades. Fans of Mister Rogers Neighborhood often reference this phrase as they note the care, love, and kindness that Fred shared during each episode. Interestingly, Fred Rogers was not a big fan of television programming when the TV first became readily available. However, as he knew families would be purchasing them as their popularity grew, he desired to produce something that would be benefit children as they watched. With Fred’s deep desire to create something that taught children about their value and individuality, and with the help of many contributors, Mister Rogers Neighborhood came to be.

Now, as Christians, there is an even greater message—God loves you. He doesn’t just like you—He LOVES you! Created in His image, being known before birth, and receiving the gift of salvation through Christ’s death and resurrection is a message, and gift, that is much more powerful than what Fred Rogers had to share. Yes, Fred, as a minister, did have a desire to share God’s love, and you have the privilege of doing so each and every day in specific ways in your Lutheran school classroom.

Do not overlook the value of the message of God’s love. Just because children are attending your Lutheran school, it doesn’t mean they know the significance of being wrapped in God’s love or what it means for their daily life. The power of the Holy Spirit is tremendous, and through His work, children, parents, and family members are shown the power of grace, kindness, mercy, and salvation.

What will you do TODAY to ensure your students know that God loves them? Consider the following, and see if you can implement one or all of the ideas:

Say it! Simply telling a student, “God loves you” can be a powerful message. Use student names too, and let them know God values them beyond measure. Encourage students to share these words with others, not only at school but also at home and within the community.

Read it! As Christians who serve in a Lutheran school, it is important to be “in” Scripture. Read God’s Word today, and look for messages of His love for you and your students. Share those Scripture messages directly with students, either as part of a class, or during informal conversation. Discission of God’s love is not just for Jesus Time or religion class. It’s for all of the time!

Write it! Words of appreciation and value are powerful. Think of the power of Scripture. God inspired writers so that Christians can be assured of God’s love and gift of salvation. Write an encouraging note to someone that highlights God’s love or have your students write a note to themselves or their peers about God’s never-ending love. Once these powerful words are shared, display them as a constant reminder of something that is so true and valuable.

In a world that is so dismayed with sin and the power of the devil, be sure you keep God’s love in the front of your mind, as the focus of your work, and at the core of all you do.

As you go about your day, remember these words from Isaiah 43:1, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.” When you belong to God, you are loved beyond measure! Share that love today. Someone needs it!
